I work in 015 and saw the video multiple times,sorry she wasn't shielding her baby. She fell on top of the kid because she was dying. You can’t get a job without an education. There is a cultural gap in the poor black community in terms a valuing education. How many times have you been to homes where kids aren’t in school and haven’t been in school. Mama says they don’t need it or she ain’t got time for it, etc. Fake Father an Jessie and the rest should be talking about sending kids to school not living wage. You want a living wage, go to school. Get you high school diploma. Go to college for a couple years. Learn a trade. Take accounting classes.
No individual criminal act is a "crime of poverty." Any criminal act is necessarily a deliberate, willful decision (to take something that is not yours, inflict injury on someone, whatever).
That being said, it is foolish in the extreme to deny that poverty is a cause of crime.
Most of us -- I think it's still most of us -- have jobs. We earn money. So we have an alternative means of getting stuff for ourselves than hitting someone over the head or breaking into someone else's home, car, or business. We might, in the short term at least, get more by stealing than we do by working, but we can balance the risk of getting caught, and the resultant shame, to ourselves and our families, against that short term gain.
But... if someone has no job, no prospect of a job, knows no one who has a job except maybe some busybody church ladies, that person may balance something -- that iPhone ripe for the snatching -- against nothing. The person still makes the decision to steal -- but his or her calculations would arguably have been different if he or she had a job.
The lack of a job does not excuse any individual criminal act but it is neither communist, socialist, nor even particularly liberal to recognize that more jobs should mean less crime.
I wish to God that people would stop shouting at each other, recognize that the other guy has a point, too, and start working together. There will always be criminals and there will always be idiots who think police are not necessary -- but why do we have to allow them to control the discussion (including our own responses)?
Here's my 2 cents: We need a sub-minimum wage for teenagers. Maybe $5 an hour for kids 16-18. If we're going to have a $15 minimum wage generally, kids who have no experience of work are going to be shut out even more than they are now. So give kids a chance to work for something. Learn how to work -- build a work record, not a prison record -- and help bring down crime in the process.
And, good Lord, yes: There are other causes of crime. The decline of family structure. The decline of -- indeed, the inversion of -- morality. But it's just about impossible to legislate morality. A sub-minimum wage -- building a work record, not a prison record -- is something that can be prescribed legislatively.

Appalachia’s poverty level is as low , or lower, than many of our “communities” but I don’t think Appalachia is overrun with these crimes of poverty.

If these gang-related shootings are due to “poverty”, why is it that the victims are almost always poorer than the perpetrators? The gangs aren’t killing and selling drugs because they’re poor - they’re doing it because they’re only well-off and want to be rich.

Yes, I agree with this posted comment above at 2:41 on 5/30/19, about our mayor talking about accountability. Notice only the police should be held accountable, criminals are not held accountable. Criminals grew up in poverty therefore anything goes. If the mayor and her allies think police are the problem, then logically use less police. Use ministers, social workers and others instead. They can talk to the criminals about poverty and disinvestment in their neighborhoods. Maybe they can talk these criminals into getting into counselling.

It's an excuse for crime. When two variables correlate, one variable could be the cause, but a third, unidentified variable, could also be the cause. And we don't know which way causation flows: does crime cause poverty or does poverty cause crime? I say the third, unidentified variable are many: sloth, poor family structure, no discipline, poor attitude, lacking grit --> all cause both poverty and crime. Yes crime and poverty are undoubtedly correlated, but poverty does not cause crime. There are many ipoverished people who do no commit crime, and certainly not random murders. Poverty and venerial disease are probably also correlated, that doesn;t mean one causes the other. There's probably a third variable causing them both. Drugs and gun possession are probably correlated too. When you have one you have the other. Does one cause the other? Of course not. A third variable does. You need to take a statistics course. ANd when you control for one variable (hold it constant), say poverty, let's make it India. What then accounts for different rates of criminality? Surely it is a third variable because poverty is controlled for. Are you getting this? You need further explanation?
