Some unimportant people need to feel important - and if someone else is footing the bill....:
- City Treasurer Melissa Conyears-Ervin paid $35 an hour for private security using taxpayer money after the Chicago Police Department eliminated her protective detail earlier this year because it found she was not in any danger, newly released records show.
Conyears-Ervin personally protested the department’s move to Mayor Lori Lightfoot, who stood behind the decision after a contentious exchange of emails, records between the two citywide elected officials show.
“Of course, if you believe the assessment is incorrect and you are in need of a security detail, there is nothing to prevent you from using resources under your control to procure private security resources,” Lightfoot wrote to Conyears-Ervin this summer. “Also, if there is a threat to you or someone on your staff, please immediately call 911.”
And just like Ed Burke, she made up some fantasy stories to justify the expenditure:
- In an interview at her City Hall office last week, Conyears-Ervin criticized the Police Department’s process to eliminate her security detail. She said it’s been a long-standing tradition for the city treasurer to receive a security detail and spoke about feeling threatened because she took office after a contested election and manages the city’s massive financial investment portfolio.
Treasurer Mendoza got rid of the detail it because it was pointless. She biked to work - Melissa might follow that example.
Conyears-Ervin "cannot tell you" because it never happened. She doesn't carry around billions, or even millions, of dollars. It's all tied up electronically and moved around the same way. If someone kidnapped the Treasurer and tried to hold her for ransom, Aldercreature Ervin would have to come up with the money (and we have our doubts he'd even be inclined to). If she disappeared tomorrow, there would be a dozen office drones available to carry out her functions. She is a caretaker at best, and if someone doesn't understand that, maybe the schools should be teaching Civics a little better.
You know, if she's that concerned, she could always get a gun.

When this story popped I asked 5 people who the city treasurer was.

These politicians do it to look more important than they are. Not a fan of Dick Durban but remember walking with him years ago at SS Irish parade. Absolutely No security and actually a nice guy. Then you got guys like Dart and Burke who have low level positions and have their homes surrounded by squad cars like they are really really important. If a U.S Senator can get by without security the Treasurer, Sheriff, and lowlife alderman can too. If Prekwinkle, Burke or Dart walked down the street 99% of people would no clue who they were.

Better yet she can dial 911like the rest of the citizens and hope the people that Chief Judge Timothy Evans is releasing on bail and the thousands Dart has lost track of and the thousands Kim Foxx refuses to prosecute don’t recognize her. Or even better get a conceal carry and get a gun.

As someone in the know - $35 to $40 an hour is what private security is getting to guard all those new legal weed dispensaries come Jan 1 2020 where such security personnel can be armed.

The rule of thumb in the security industry is 75% goes to the company, the rest to the guard. So, her guard/driver is getting about 10 bucks an hour, give or take. That is just about what the security company pays the armed guards at IIT, ten bucks an hour. So, I doubt it is an off duty or retired cop doing this.

Jason Ervin, 28th ward alderman/husband of City Treasurer Melissa Ervin, has been using and abusing his own private security force privileges for years.
Back in 2014 or 2015, he used an off duty, illegally armed private security officer to snoop around the vehicles, both private and departmental, and record their license plates while they played softball in Garfield Park. Jason hated Garry McCarthy and those white officers in his neighborhood.
The guard was stopped and arrested for having a loaded gun while off duty. I'm sure those charges disappeared in court because Jason was responsible for having a few judges seated on the bench.
And Jason hired security, including his CPD cousin, to provide security for him. Ask the O11 and 012 district police officers if this is true or not
