Welcome to the Department

You'd think that people taking a promotional exam would realize what an actual promotion entailed - things like salary, bidding rights, and what seniority you were giving up to get promoted:
  • New sgts just literally came out. Day one, during conversation a Sgt with 19 years on got into an argument with another Sgt who only has on 13 years but has been a Sgt for the past two years. She says that she expects to get a good furlough because she has 19 years on.

The Sgt with 13 years breaks the news to her that she is dead last in seniority on the watch and she flips and says I don’t care I have more time on the job than you and won’t let someone with 13 years pick in front of her. She “has kids and needs spring break and a summer furlough.” Sgt with 13 years now irritated and thinking she’s nuts now says no kidding. Man, good luck with that but not a chance you will be getting that furlough. In fact spring break and summer are always gone last, he says that judging by the numbers he is gonna be able to get the 4A (spring break) because he goes to California with the family.

Well, she lost it. Still is ranting on how she has more time on the job and she needs and deserves it and that “kid” shouldn’t get anything because of her time on. She runs to the Lt and he screams her out of the office with the parting words of, “your time on the job means nothing with those stripes on you’re arm, we might as well call you a PPO because this is your first day of seniority.. enjoy your 1B,2A. She cries and runs out. Embarrassing. And guess what, she has been inside secretary in units for the past 14 years!!! A whole 4 or 5 years on the street and spoiled for the rest. Enjoy midnights and enjoy your furlough in January bigmouth.
At least sergeants bid in two waves, so she'll probably get something close to decent. But do you know how entertaining this person's remaining career is going to be? And how funny it's going to be bidding her start time when Squad Policing arrives citywide and she's at the back of THAT line, too?

This is exactly why many people don't even bother with a promotion exam after a certain point. You have to go to the back of the line that you spent so much time advancing in.

Sounds a little like 019’s former sgt., KH last year. Was told he was going to midnights for the new year. Cried, said he’d hit the medical, and then calls his clout, who sends him to the airport. Had about a yr or so as a sgt. Low man in the list. Yet, we reward bad behavior.

Ohhhhhhhh...

This one is going to be a peach to work for...

Got into an argument over nothing with another Sergeant?

Ran to the Lieutenant to "tattle"
because she didn't like what she was
rightfully told?

Lieutenant chased her out of his office?

Got her supervisory cherry popped
on the very first day in the district?

Shakes her fist and yells
insults at the moon?

Heh...

Living the dream in a hidey-hole unit
for the last however long?

"But I got 19 years on da job!"

Stupid.
SHOULD.
Hurt.

Feeling really sorry for you Coppers in that district.

She should be assigned to supervising the rats at Bulk Storage
down on 39th & Michigan. At least she would be out of the way.

Listen I'm a Sgt, I can't believe someone could be that dumb. Even the biggest idiots on the job know you start over when you change rank. Here are the facts, if this Sgt has been a house mouse for 14 years she has connections. She will make a call and get put on days by management. She will cry and get a boss from HQ to call her DC and get her furlough switched to what she wants. I've been a Sgt for quite a while. I've seen it time and time again. Where someone below me in seniority gets a management spot ahead of me. I've seen the Sgt last in seniority somehow end up with a 7B and 13A furlough when neither were available when they picked. Usually Sgt's try to take care of each other anyway. There is not that many of us in the district. This Sgt. will become quite unpopular in a hurry with actions like this.

I’m Not the generation you’re talking about, or maybe I am (gen x-er). The bombers not only ruined this department, but every major department within the US, including the US. Look around asshole. People with your like mindset will stick up for the boomer generation without the realization that every piece of shit politician or merit exempt that gets bitched at on this blog is a fucking boomer. If you car to look further, look at the cool county president, sheriff, Illinois house, and the judges. Then if you care to expand your research, start looking nationally, like congress.

Yes boomers are fucking over generations to come. Yes, I’m aware there are many exceptions, but the fact that boomers are running this country into the ground (by design) is undeniable. Wake up and open your eyes

That was the worst thing about making Sergeant, your seniority is lost for furlo picks. I still think that sucks and that is something that should be looked at. I had over 20 years on job when I got promoted and so jerk, and I do mean jerk of a sergea t with 10 years on the job, 3 as Sergeant called me kid, well me being a seasoned vet and a working cop had to correct his attitude quickly, but I knew I would lose my 8B and 13B furlos going into it, but I was making more money that little punk boy. I'm sure this spoiled little girl will find a way to get her time off.

The Lt there just made a special watch ( against contract regulations ) so his 4 butt boys in charge of the biggest training scam in department history , can all be on days together. Only one of the three made it on a legit bid and the other 3 are on management which is 3 out of 10 which is more than the 20% allotted . These 4 posers are also gonna pick furlough between themselves which will mean they'll get better picks than some of the PO's who made the bid on days. Top it all off with a Friday / Saturday DOG they had all last summer these 4 clowns led by a bigger clown of a Sgt. True that.
Don’t take a spot if you can’t take the drop in seniority (or juice).

When crybaby patrolmen (persons) become Sergeants, they become nothing more than crybaby Sergeants.
- cry to get back to their old Unit.
- cry to get back their old watch.
- cry to get back to their day off group.
- cry to get back their furloughs.
Using all their same old D-1 time worn excuses.

As if nobody ever heard of;
“I take/pickup my kids to the...”,
“I take care of my aged parents, auntie, turtle...”,
“ I have spin class degree program...”, etc.
I - I - I, mine, mine, mine.
We all know the type.

Too bad for you all, hope that sourpuss doesn’t make it a very bitter tour for everyone.

I love it. Some people on this department have only one thing to hang their hat on in this department and it’s seniority. I love hearing guys talk all about their seniority until someone with more seniority beats them out of something then they still cry how they are “one of” the most senior people on the watch.. well, apparently not enough. And I really love when stuff like this happens. Nothing burns some of these house cats more or do nothings than when they finally get promoted and they have 20-25 years on and a guy with 10 years on gets a summer furlough and they don’t. It’s classic. Or when they hit midnights and get stuck as the late sector Sgt because the guy with 10 years has been a Sgt for a year already and isn’t last anymore.. I feast on those tears. And yes, I’m a Sgt and I only have 12 years on. I’ve been a Sgt for just over 3 years and I’m number one in seniority on 3rd watch in my district. It may be a shithole but it feels great getting EVERYTHING I want whenever I want it. My slip trumps all and furlough in the summer is fantastic.

Now that he’s out at O’hare (with 5 min as a Sgt) he is crying because he felt he should have been offered the Tact team when their Sgt retires next month.

Now finish telling the whole story about how you're still dumb as fuck no matter what rank you are! Not to mention senior officers will still tell you to go fuck yourself!!! Like right now GO FUCK YOURSELF

It's probably the same person that used to be in the bike unit and literally cried that seniority was not fair especially when some people with more seniority don't have children. She actually felt that because she had children, she should have preference. And she just made sergeant.

If the department wanted you to have children....they would have gave them to you.

11/27/2019 10:18:00 AM

Sorry sarge. Day one in you were the new guy. Not a thing in the world would change that. In fact your first week you have to ride along with other sgts to learn how to do the job.. even a Sgt with 10 years on knows more of what to do than you. Now, he is the “senior” Sgt and that’s all that matters. You may have knowledge and time but when it comes to the time off, slips in, furloughs, late or early cars you are last. Zero. Nobody. Sorry, but you get the stripes then no bad feelings when it’s time to hit the reset button back to FNG. Now fetch me coffee!!!!!

Sounds just like cyrbaby Sgt M.Z. from 012 who after arriving and being sent to midnights, has whined everyday and always asks to come in later AND leave early because “he’s tired, he has kids, he’s sick, his wife is sick, his kids are sick, blah, blah, blah”. The officers can’t count on him because he’s useless and clueless, and no one in their right mind would ask this dummy for any advice. He’s in for shock now as he whined his way into days. Try pulling that nonsense on the senior sergeants on days next year because he’s in for a shock.

Just one of a thousand that think that. Like nobody else has children and those that don’t are supposed to lose their contractual rights. Things won’t change. Bosses have caved into them for years

11/27/2019 08:54:00 AM

With regard to the country, there is a lot of blame to go around. Lots of useless self-serving, corrupt politicians. Old fossils like Bernie living a good life and really doing nothing at all in his 40 years sucking the taxpayers out of a nice salary, healthcare and pension. Look at AOC, born in 1989, what a fool she is. Imagine her as president. Pete Buttplug and AOC are the future. He can't even run a small city, but extremists like this are the future. There is a lot of public apathy, people sick of both parties because neither really cares about average folks. Politicians in bed with corporations, lobbyists and such types. Nothing new. Average people only matter before an election, nothing new. What's new is the incessant whining, crying, safe space shit as well as the extremist liberal rubbish shoved down our throats and to our children. Who started that and pushes it daily? Look at how the millennial typically behaves on social media. Always crying, having a melt down over some trivial thing like an immature child. Look at the number of cops that have gotten in trouble posting stupid stuff on facebook and other social media. The numbers that can't live without being on there and posting pics of themselves. Cops should be smarter than that. I believe these types tend to be younger than the boomers. Start preparing, the selfie generation also will have a lot to answer for. What stays constant: greed, power, corruption. Which pretty much sums up Faceberg and Google.

Why is Groot mayor, because of the low turnout at the polls. People can't even go out and vote let alone read up on the judges and candidates up for reelection. That's hardly just a boomer problem. The Chicago Way won't die because the old timers have retired. And you should know that yourself. Blaming someone else for the way things are today, whining over little everything, it's taken on a life of it's own and that's a newer generation thing. Talk about ruining the country, the country has been turned upside down due to extreme liberalism. How can Google play a part in that, let me think. The old horses are still in power but who was Bernie's voting base in 2016? So of course these greedy old pols are still hanging on to their power but the message they push is geared toward their younger voters, at least in the dem party. Read Summit News, it looks like parody pieces rather than the real world today. I can't believe the world has become this way and yes, old liberal politicians still push their rubbish just as when they were younger. They want to stay new and relevant and keep that power. The dem party is full tilt off the chart liberals and this country is much more liberal than it used to be. Using proper pronouns, transphobia, restroom controversies. Why is this important. Was that just the old goats in the party pushing this garbage, I think not. And the McDonald lecture series in CPS? That will certainly help to further warp young minds. Just wait until younger extremists get into power and you will see just how much worse it can get.

Cry babies in all City Departments.

I had the misfortune to meet one today. In 13 years at O'Hare, I'd never met a Cop I would happily tell to shut their %$# mouth if they can't stay professional in uniform and in public.

What the Heck is wrong with the Uniforms at O'Hare? Do they all flush their personalities and professionalism to get that gig or is it just when they actually have to Work on something and not hide all day like sweep the derelicts from the Trains at the station?

I watched him get mouthy to a different department City worker that had the apparent absolute gall to wish the Cop "Happy Thanksgiving" when he was getting off the Blue Line this morning as I was working near the CTA booth around 7am.

All inside bid positions should be re-bid annually. As it stands, the bid lasts until you relinquish it. So, if somebody with three years lucks into a bid, there they stay. If the positions were re-bid annually, it would give other people a chance to grab the spot for a year, and would prevent somebody from making a career out of it.

What people don't understand is that when you accept the position as Sergeant of Police you resign your position as Police Officer. You are taking a new job.

Not purely to be sure as you Comp time hours are kept and transferred to your new position and pay. Perhaps the solution would be to cash out your hours prior to promotion. But the City probably couldn't come up with the cash.

The clouted wouldn’t want that. I’ve known guys that made OT as patrolman and cashed the hours in years later at captains rate

As it stands, hours on the books can stay on the books until you retire. They are then paid out at your rate when you retire. Every promotion and every raise during your career makes those hours more valuable. Supervisors are given the option to cash out 200 hours annually because they have no other option to take the daily administrative time in cash.
