- A wedding ceremony at a West Ridge house was broken up by police last week, and drew condemnation from the area’s alderman and religious leaders grappling with one of the biggest coronavirus hot spots in the state.
A Jewish Orthodox wedding ceremony was held in the 6800 block of North Francisco Avenue the afternoon of April 23. Eventually, dozens of guests congregated on the home’s front yard and in the street, according to sources and video of the event.
Police were called to the block and helped to disperse the crowd, Ald. Debra Silverstein (50th) said in a note to constituents. Chicago Police said it received two calls about public safety concerns at the wedding, a department spokesperson said.
So dumbassery crosses all neighborhoods it seems.

I have seem similar things in the Orthodox Jewish Community recently. People out and about walking. Children playing and bicycling. Although the people were sticking to their residential side streets, many were not social distancing or using protective masks. Maybe they think that they have herd immunity as theirs is a closed society.
They wedding planners should have gotten a court order first... TROs seem easy to get. With a judge's blessing, the wedding would have been kosher (pardon the pun).
As long as Groot and Pritzker have their lock down orders... Well, you get the result you got.

No cause of crying religious oppression due to the cops breaking the event up AFTER it fell into the streets. The common sense Chicago Rabbinical Council even say that was an asshat move to have such a wedding.

Most Orthodox Jewish families have large households. Multiple generations living together. Take about 3-4 Orthodox Jewish families and it is easily almost 30 people with about 7-8 per household. The parties on the west side are groups of strangers who obviously don’t live together. HUGE difference.

Arguably, you cannot defend one cultural practice & not the other, so get off your high horse. Yes, one is a religious ceremony & the other looks like Sodom & Gomorra, but both are cultural practices. Everyone has had to adjust. Do I condone either, no. Do I have more empathy for one over the other, certainly. Just look at all the funerals that haven’t been able to give loved ones their proper due. Jesus Christ, I had to put a beloved pet to sleep during this and couldn’t say “goodbye” how he deserved.
