Suburban Shortage
The Oak Park Police Department is budgeted for 118 officers but 32 of those positions are vacant.
That’s 27% of the entire police force.
Police Chief Shatonya Johnson said the department is working as fast as they can to fill the positions, but she’s not concerned about a risk to public safety despite each division being affected. "Despite our staffing levels, the police department continues to strive for excellence," she said.
Village president Vicki Scaman said her biggest concern is not safety, but rather the strain of the vacancies on the police department. “I feel that our police department does an amazing job despite the vacancies but that the covering of those vacancies is going to have its wear and tear on our personnel,” Scaman said. “And that’s not ideal.”
How about asking the citizens living on the eastern edge of Oak Park, up and down Austin Avenue how they feel about missing over a quarter of their police.
Of course, they voted for this, so maybe they're big fans of it.

Back in 2011 when I was testing with different departments, each time it was anywhere from $30 to $100 just to sit for the exam. These days not only are all the exams free but departments cant even give that shit away. Theblueline has over 150 ads running constantly. The job is not the same one I was hired on in 2011. It now blows big monkey ass and I wouldn’t suggest anyone get on unless you have zero options. Even then.

I left CPD and I’m working with a former oak park police officer. He said they all left cause they went way too liberal following Chicagos lead. Only problem is they want their officers to police under Chicago scrutiny but follow suburban standards.

So many of these police chiefs remind me of the Dirty Harry film, The Enforcer, where Harry asks Tyne Daly’s character to recount her most important felony arrest. When told that she’d never made a felony arrest, Harry asks about her most important misdemeanor arrest.. Again, nothing.

I remember lining up to take police tests back in the mid 1970's. A couple hundred guys and gals would show up for one or two positions at suburban police departments. Times have definitely changed.

Officers in Oak Park are leaving in great numbers now because they can. It’s a buyers market. Several towns hire laterals and offer bonus money. Why stay and suffer with the Uber progressive non-supportive village government and totally incompetent bosses when you can pick up and move further west to nicer safer suburbs who are happy to have you and pay you more. OPPD will never recover, and the citizens there can look forward to either Cook County patrolling Oak Park, or brand new incompetent do-nothing officers driving aimlessly around town. My sister lives in Oak Park about two blocks from Austin. A while back I asked her why she was still there, considering that one of the most dangerous areas of Chicago was two blocks away. She actually told me that what I was saying was racist, and that she lived in OAK PARK, not Chicago, and felt perfectly safe there. Good luck!

I am an Academy Operator. All of you people need to be thankful that you have two days of training. And for those of you who hate us instructors because you do not have a college degree, are not articulate, and cannot read, go to college and earn your spot at the academy.

About 30 ago a gas station was held up by an armed robber . The station operator got his piece and sent a few rounds of lead at the suspect. Oak Park police responded.
They searched high and low for the robber so they could have him testify against the station operator for violating Oak Park's handgun ban. Even publicly asked the suspect to turn himself in, with immunity, to testify against the victim.
I've worked with many outstanding Oak Park officers in a neighboring department. It's a shame what they have become. Talk to the officers who still work there and hear the ridiculous stories. There are reasons why senior officers leave for less money elsewhere.

About 5 years ago a suburban police department was involved in a car chase involving armed robberies, Oak Park police were blocking responding suburban departments from chasing the offenders. Who the hell wants to work there?
I left for a suburb department. They were so short staffed, they refused to give anyone days off using comp time and forced coppers to use sick time (no medical in the burbs!). With that being said, they required a minimum 6 people working a shift. So, if someone called in sick, they held over an officer to work 4hr extension. Mind you, we were on 12 hour shifts. ME, being lowest senior guy got the shaft every time. No early ducks exist, so that's a 1700-0855 tour of duty. The worst experience I ever had with policing in my short 8 years. Thank God CPD took me back.
Read an article in some police magazine/journal a few years ago that ranked morale in police departments across the nation and Oak Park ranked near the bottom. F that place!

Having a degree doesn't mean you are educated. I met a copper who had a masters in my academy class and she was the dumbest shit in the whole class where we as a class had to carry her. Don't lecture me on how education makes you smarter and more valuable.

Oak Park Chief’s job is to keep her job. She is not going to openly discuss the strain it puts on her police officers, working short, no time off, or days off cancelled. Hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil. Everything is great and all my police are happy. Story of a lot of suburban departments. There are limited people who want to do this job, even less want to do it for a department with poor moral, poor leadership, or in a community that is more interested in defunding their police instead of funding their police.

We couldn't eat at several restaurants because oak parks residents would complain that they didn't want us in there (this was over 10 years ago) I had oak park residents literally blow thru red lights while yelling at me to follow me while I was blowing lights in my marked police vehicle trying to catch up to offenders that crossed into their town. I talked to oak park coppers who told me their residents would call their station when cops would step out of their car for a smoke, because their tax money should be on patrol, not stopped. Piss on them, these progressive scum should reap what they've sown. And I'll be somewhere laughing....
