We still haven't seen this addressed in any meaningful way:
- [from 2020] The DC Police Union is reporting that one of the city's officers was rushed to the hospital with vision loss after being attacked with a laser by a rioter. According to the union, six officers have been hospitalized for injuries since Thursday night.
There's supposed to be a protective strip across the face shields of the riot helmets that diffuses the lasers, but last we heard, the Department wasn't replacing worn straps, rotting webbing and elastic or cracked face shields.
And during recent events, the orders from the exempt ranks (earned not given, right?) has been to NOT wear the helmets because they're too intimidating....just carry it (meaning one less hand to use to defend or apprehend) or keep it on the bus (which you aren't anywhere near).
We know a number of Officers who have purchased their own protective eye wear, but has there been any actual effort to acquire meaningful protection for Officers?

Bought a pair few months ago in prep and in case I deploy. Delivered in a few days. Called the company and they said these are the glasses to protect from lasers used by Antifa fucks. $220 with shipping and tax. Sounds like a lot but what is your vision worth?
Foam ear plugs for the loud Ambient noise and his forbid real loud fireworks and mouth piece just in case.
And don’t forget any TRR do a IOD just in case you pull some unused back muscle and need a few months to recover.

The department’s version of meaningful eye protection is the red strip on your face shield. Instructors at FFO training even said it won’t protect against all lasers. (Demonstration was included at training showing how certain colored lasers can penetrate that red strip).
More than likely many will end up at a protest whether assigned, or they call you at the last minute when the $hit hit hits the fan. Don’t be unprepared. Make sure you have the proper goggles with you at ALL times. The goggles can be expensive, there are sites that cater to LE but can take awhile to get them. If you get hit with a laser DON’T remain working, get to an ER stat, that has Ophthalmology Residents on call. Remember the Medical Center complex of hospitals is just south of the United Center. The CPD should have a protocol on this.

Not my favorite news channel or reporters, but you should know what is going on.
Leather jackets are intimidating. Mag lights are dangerous. Wooden batons are for parades. Traffic stops unfairly target POC. The real safety issue is to protect criminals, not police officers. They put up a big sign inside every ice rink. Skate at your own risk, we assume no liability.
What about giving us some kind of personal safety zone when dealing with the rioters? Other places have passed laws that give officers a 2-3 foot zone and if encroached by rioters in a menacing manner they can be arrested. How come we don’t have something like that?
These loser politiliars doing anything to help our brave? Everyone’s ancestors will start rolling in their graves. This is disgusting and needs correction.
Remember, this is the same leadership who left brave LEOs out of any safety measures during the lock downs, st Floyd riots, etc. Perhaps business will step up and donate aka John Lennon and NYPD security vests. Oh wait, big business is fleeing the shitty. Never mind

It is no surprise the Department cares little for you and your safety. It is all part of the degradation and demoralizing of the rank and file. You owe the Department nothing, absolutely nothing. As the DNC approaches, remember this will be the one and only opportunity to express your disgust and displeasure for Dept-wide corruption, mismanagement and incompetence. Choose wisely and either way know that their payback will be a bitch.
This is an absolute embarrassment. I will not be following any orders which tell me to leave my helmet in the bus. I don’t give a fck how it looks to the public.
You can be effective wearing these 10lb cosmonaut helmets anyway. Center of gravity completely changes. You would think that after 50 years of being in service there would be an upgrade to something more bearable.
I was at the bull shit FFO training and they checked my gas mask and low and behold it was expired. I asked if the department is providing a new one and I was told no, it’s too expensive. I showed the instructor my helmet strap that has been broke and asked if I could get a new one and I was told that they would e-mail me with instructions on how to get one. Only problem is the instructor never asked for my e-mail. So, if I receive any type of trauma during this bull shit convention I will be going IOD. Fuck this city. They want the national stage , but are more concerned with uniforms and appearance than functioning equipment for officers so they don’t get injured.
Not having the proper safety equipment is an immediate stop work or a flagrant safety violation subject to termination. Officers without the proper safety equipment to do the job should refuse to go in areas where this is needed for proper protection.
I remember about 15 years back I had to staff a request up through the Secretary of the Air Force to allow our people to use "dazzlers". Real cool little lasers you could mount or hand carry. Their purpose was to dazzle the eyes. The laser emitted off a pivoting access. This meant the laser could not focus on one spot for any length of time, there by preventing blindness or worse to the jihadi... I mean good Iraqi citizen.
Again, they labeled it lethal use of force. Not sure why it's not like that in the USA...

And if a chief or deputy chief tells you that you don't need to fill out TRRs or IODs after a confrontation with the rioters like they did in 2020, ignore them, fill out the forms, go to the hospital if necessary, and fill out the overtime slips. Some bosses did this to save on the OT. Screw them and make them pay even if you are at the 12th, 14th or 16th hour. When the lawsuits came down, those same bosses were retired with their golden pensions while POs had to explain why they didn't follow orders when they were on video using force or force was used against them. "R/O was struck in head with unknown object thrown by unknown subject, causing pain and discomfort. R/O went to hospital to check for concussions. R/O deployed baton and/or spray against unknown assailant in large crowd of protesters who conspired with each other to assail R/O and fellow officers."
If they want to cancel your days off and interrupt your family life due to their incompetency at planning these events and retaining sufficient numbers of officers, make them pay. I hope the Union is ready to help officers and back them up when this happens again this month.
Perhaps someone with more knowledge in the area of OHSA safety standards could answer this question.
If an exempt rank will not allow riot helmets to be worn during demonstration are they in violation of OHSA rules concerning protective equipment for employees?

Purchase your own eye protection this is not the time to be cheap. The anti laser strip on the helmet face shield sounds like snake oil sales pitch. I bet it's just colored version of packing tape. Strong lasers cost $5.99 on TEMU. The $14.99 lasers pop balloons at a distance or over 20 feet. $250 units will ignite seasoned wood at decent distance given enough time on target. I couldn't imagine what it would do to the eye globe even at a distance of even 100 feet. These lasers can legally be obtained online. There are real horror stories of laser accidents at the (losteye) forum. Permanent visual impairment is devastating.
Do what you have to do to keep each other safe, but also remember to give this City as much as they are giving us in terms of support….. absolutely nothing.

I remember the officers that were shot and killed in Dallas because they were ordered to not wear body armor because it "looked intimidating".

Any word on the groups in town causing havoc downtown and in the West Loop on mopeds and little 3-wheelers? (This is not the same weekend dirt bike gangs from the burbs). Saw 20-25 of them racing on the sidewalks in the West Loop and through Grant Park the past couple of days. They stopped to spray paint "ACAB" graffiti and ruin bus stops. Look Arab or Hispanic but hard to tell with their masks...but def from out of town as they were using their phones to navigate. I might get reassigned to bikes and am thinking of hitting the medical instead as no one has a plan to deal with these type of protestors.
I wonder if all these fraudulent voters are committing welfare fraud also. Future ISIS terrorists ?

Better question. ....why is OSHA looking to fine the department for officers caught not wearing the yellow reflective vest while in traffic during the DNC? Yet no riot gear was allowed to be worn during the 2020 riots and OSHA did nothing!

I urge all Officers to remember who it was that implemented defunding of the Police, who supported the rioters in 2020 and who created and signed into law, the Safety Act when you are out there and asked to protect the very same people who is responsible for the above.
