The trouble is, everyone knows it's just that...."talk":
With just a week before the Democratic National Convention kicks off in Chicago, the city’s top cop on Monday sought to quell the fears of movers and shakers about what will be tolerated from the protesters planning to descend on the city.
“We’re not going to allow you to riot,” Police Supt. Larry Snelling assured the crowd gathered for a City Club of Chicago event at Magliano’s Banquets downtown.
“Protesting and rioting are two different things. You have the right to protest, but there will be no rioting tolerated,” Snelling added as the business leaders and elected officials in the crowd began to applaud.
Snelling has repeatedly claimed his department is prepared to both handle demonstrations and keep neighborhoods safe throughout the convention, which is set to run from Aug. 19-22.
His tough talk comes amid concerns over how officers will manage protests and potentially respond to the type of chaos that marred the 1968 Democratic convention and swept through Chicago in the summer of 2020.
You know what really annoys us?
- Every media report and every politician ignores the fact that there was a convention here in 1996....and it went off almost flawlessly. No major disruptions, no riots to speak of, arrests were minimal. A fully professional endeavor, and no one says a word
- Every media report and every politician forgets the NATO summit. For all of McCompStat McCarthy's faults, he ran a decent event on the police side and aside from one well publicized incident during a night of disturbances, it went very well.
Everyone is reverting back to 1968, and that wasn't a "police riot" no matter what you read. We know those cops, we grew up with those cops coaching us in grade school and high school, we met those guys at the tail end of their careers when we came on and believe us, they get a bad rap 99 times out of 100.
As for 2020, that was a disaster. But it was (A) engineered, and (B) inevitable after nearly twenty years of "merit" promotions putting unqualified people in the wrong spots.
In the meantime, Larritorious is just blowing smoke up everyone's asses. If they want to riot, they're going to riot. Conehead won't discourage them, CPD won't stop them and Crimesha won't prosecute them, so absent even a hint of consequences, it will be what it is.
And if they want it low-key to make the Kackler look good, then it's be that, too.

I feel so disgruntled and disconnected with the department. I’ll never break my back again to go above and beyond anything for them. I feel like I failed it was all due to the department. I so badly just want to retire and MoveOn. The time is coming and I just can’t wait. I’m not the only one who feels this way. I talk daily to officers who feel like I do. Department doesn’t have our backs and never will. Bunch of merit screwballs run the place. There’s no leadership in CPD that I’d go above and beyond for anymore. I have had a A career like many others with bad bosses, no good breaks and passed over with them throwing down the list. I’m surviving and will survive shortly being retired. One year to go!

Let us not forget that Fred Waller who is currently earning a combined 330K was in charge as Chief of Patrol during the riots. Wtf are we paying a moron who was a Sgt. in “Tact/gang investigations” for decades, had ties to the Ronald Watts corruption case, was meritoriously promoted to Lt. and then 3 weeks later was quickly promoted to Commander. Then miraculously made Area 2 deputy in approximately 18 months and then spent only a few months as a Deputy before subsequently being promoted by Eddie “Da DUI Playa” Johnson to Chief of one of the largest patrol division’s in the country. With almost no experience in patrol he fucked that division up beyond repair. He and Eddie then shuffled around their people and put them in key spots. If you control HR, background investigations, random drug, and BIA then you control the department. Pay attention and connect the dots: Talley was in HR was rewarded 4X and made meritorious Lt, Commander, Deputy and currently currently Chief of BiA. Allyson Johnson (rewarded 2x and made meritoriously, then few weeks later commander), Timothy Moore rewarded 3x). Meritoriously promoted to Lt and Commander a few months later then retired with exempt pay and later brought back as civilian deputy director of BIA. Just about the entire command staff are merits that can’t count to 10 on their toes. If you want true leadership and reform, they must purge Waller and everyone connected to him. You want some DEI, fine let those selected go through a panel of outside agency Chiefs who can screen and recommend candidates to the superintendent. They should at a minimum be able to communicate intelligently and be articulate not the embarrassing hibbity jibbity M/F’s we have now. There are patrol officers with post graduate degrees and law degrees who fit the script but because they are not connected, corrupt or part of the “Flava of da month Frat” they don’t have a choice.
No I’m not racist but just calling spade a spade…. I’ve had plenty of minority partners over the years and even some supervisors that are top notch. They should be given an opportunity to get promoted. I understand that not everyone test well and not everyone will be straight off the list so If meritorious has to exist, then streamline the process and try to screen the best not the connected.

While political favors and graft would abound under a “lighter shade” of leadership- there was a level of competency, and things still tended to function.
Now that Chicago has become a “Chocolate City”- with an African Americans at the top of majority of city and county departments, things have effectively fallen apart. Financially mismanaged at levels never seen before, and chaos in the streets. And nowadays the chaos is not only uncontrolled, it’s tacitly CONTROLLED ENCOURAGED by our “leaders”.
And you’re right, the department has always had nepotism. Always will if the system doesn’t change. But this particular shade doesn’t even try to hide their flagrant promotion of subpar officers/humans way above their pay grade.
It would be comical if it wasn’t crippling the department for the next 20 years.

We were in crown caps (that was before cargo pants, base ball caps and black outer vest carriers,) It was a week of checking out "mostly ugly democrat women" and celebrities! It was very uneventful! The Bulls victory riots were more fun!
