Stolen Gun (UPDATE - And TV)

What kind of a world do we live in where a burglar can waltz into a Deputy Superintendent's home and steal a .357 revolver?

Oh yeah - Chicago. Where the police are 2,000 short every day and the taxpaying districts are sending all sorts of cars to the places where people can't behave.

Sorry, we forgot.

UPDATE: BreakingNews.com story linked here.

I BET THE FOLLOWING HAPPENED.

OFFICERS ON SCENE ACTUALLY PERFORMED A CANVASS OF THE WHOLE BLOCK WITH THE HELP OF A SGT.

I BET AN E.T PRINTED EVERY DAMN THING IN THE HOUSE.

I BET MULTIPLE DICKS WERE SENT OUT ASAP TO THE SCENE BEFORE THE PAPER WAS DRY ON THE REPORT.

I BET A DETAILED LIST OF THE EXEMPTS PROPERTY WERE PUT ON THE REPORT, NOT THE OLD CONTACT THE DICKS WITH A LIST WHEN U GET IT.

I BET A FLASH MESSAGE WAS SENT CITY WIDE AND A TEXT WAS SENT 4 ALL WHITE SHIRTS TO HELP OUT.

I BET THE MAJOR CASE SQUAD IS PULLING UP ALL THE BURGLARS IN THE AREAS INFOS AND TACT TEAMS WILL BE VISITING THEM SOON.

I WISH THAT THE 2 OFFICERS WHO WERE KILLED IN AREA 4 CASES WERE CLOSED WITH CONVICTIONS AND DEATH PENALTIES INSTEAD OF BEING OPEN CASES.

MAKES YOU WONDER WHAT KINDA TREATMENT UR MOTHER OR KIDS WOULD GET IF THEY WERE VICTIM OF A CRIME RIGHT OFFICE!?!

Breaking News makes the comment on how the "full weight" of the department may be utilized in tracking down the burglars involved in Peterson's ("the city's number 3 cop") break-in.

I hope the manpower allocated in solving this injustice to the Bossman is prorated to reflect the overall manpower of our depleted ranks.

After all, what would the taxpaying citizens of this fair city think if one of us got preferential treatment/resources for a simple crime against property when violent crime is rampant is so many neighborhoods?

I'll bet my next 2 paychecks that the "perps are collared" within 2 days. I'm sure the powers that be will cite "community input" and concerted efforts within the Department when charges are announced.

And I'll bet two additional paychecks that I still won't see a beat car (or otherwise) on the west end of 008 unless I drive past Portillos on 56th & Harlem.

I have a gun in the front of the house, the back of the house and the middle immediately accessible to me if I need it.
If they break in while I'm not home and take them... so be it. The gun is considered secured inside my locked home.

Not saying he is in the right or wrong but just wanted to educate some of our brothers in blue who are saying that he is in violation of G.O. by not having the weapon in a safe. The following is straight from the order. Please pay attention to the last section under note and notice the word "may" and consider the fact of his living arrangements. Does he live alone, are there any young children living there, etc. All these factors weigh in when considering how the weapon is secured.

G.O. 07-01 DEPARTMENT APPROVED WEAPONS AND AMMUNITION

XVII. PRESCRIBED DUTY WEAPON LOCKING DEVICE

A. The Department:
1. Requires sworn Department members to secure their prescribed duty weapon when the prescribed duty weapon is not on their person.

2. Strongly encourages sworn members to secure any/all other firearms, which may be in their possession or under their control as mandated by Illinois Compiled Statute (ILCS) entitled “Firearms; Child Protection” (720 ILCS 5/24-9).

B. Effective 1 January 2000, 720 ILCS 5/24-9 “Firearms; Child Protection” was enacted.

NOTE: In essence, the statue states that a firearm must be secured when the likelihood exists that a minor under the age of 14 could gain unlawful access to the firearm. Department policy regarding the securing of a sworn member’s prescribed duty weapon is more restrictive.

C. Sworn Department members not carrying their prescribed duty weapon on their person and not having an alternate means to secure the prescribed duty weapon will place the Department-issued locking device on their prescribed duty weapon.

NOTE: Sworn Department members may secure their prescribed duty weapon in a locked box/container or secured in another location that a reasonable person would believe will prohibit access to the prescribed duty weapon by unapproved individuals and meets the requirements of 720 ILCS 5/24-9.

*********

Wait a minute. Where in the city code does it say that if you have a weapon, it has to be secured in a safe? Does this only apply to police?

Such rules are bullshit. Have you ever tried to retrieve an unloaded, locked weapon from a safe, unlock it, load it, then use it on an offender in your own home? A gun not ready is like having no gun at all. The only thing unsafe about keeping guns in this fashion is the threat of theft from your own home, which exists because A)law-abiding people aren't encouraged to kill home invaders. B)Cops are not encouraged to kill anyone even if their life is on the line. C)the City doesn't provide for the keeping of legal handguns in the home (except by police - you're lucky you have this guys, they could just make you leave them in a locker at the station). and D)because assclown politicians short-staff our police force and cater to the criminals.

It's a tragedy someone got this guy's gun but it could have been anyone. You just never know anymore.

PS: You can "blame" the officer for not securing his gun, but how about placing blame on the criminal that stole his property? I mean, someone steals your car and drives drunk and kills someone..do you blame the car, the alcohol, the owner..or the asshole that committed all the crimes?

OFF TOPIC:
Brazil on Wednesday sought to uncover the cause of a massive and mysterious blackout overnight, amid concerns of energy supply stability for the 2016 Olympics host nation.

The outage, which hit at 10:15 pm Tuesday (0015 GMT Wednesday) and lasted around four hours, plunged nearly half the country into darkness after supply problems from the country's biggest power plant.

An estimated 70 million people -- more than a third of Brazil's 190-million-strong population -- were affected, according to the energy ministry, mainly in the major southern cities, including Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro.

Off-duty police were called up as thousands were trapped... Some cafes closed out of widespread fear of a nocturnal crime wave.

PS: You can "blame" the officer for not securing his gun, but how about placing blame on the criminal that stole his property? I mean, someone steals your car and drives drunk and kills someone..do you blame the car, the alcohol, the owner..or the asshole that committed all the crimes?

11/11/2009 11:08:00 AM

Exactly. Step off of the DS. He is one of us despite how you feel and I wouldn't wish that on anyone. He also does not have to secure his firearm in a safe. Kudos to you if that's the way you do it but it isn't a law or order. Its just a messed up situation when you have assholes rummaging through your house and taking shit. Where was his neighbors? Nobody saw anything?

Hey idiot, why would you live in 014 anyway? You KNEW what you were moving into. All of you "URBAN PIONEERS" that call 911 about drug dealers and thieves need to get a life. You bought there, you knew who lived there, change your diapers and shut up! Move to 016 if it's too much for you.

Hey dumbass...why r u talking shit? When I came on this fucking job, the starting pay was $32,800. The house I could afford then was $105K and it was here in 013. My home now appraises for $510K and my block is a MODEL block. The ONLY break in here in the last 15 years was a garage. Last I checked, our paycheck ain't gonna go to far living up in 016 with those crazy ass taxes.

Welcome to 016th District day shift.
12 beats each 1 man
1 wagon 2 man
3 teams of 2 po's assigned to schools
Tact teams don't work days.
6 po's assigned to burglary/robbery team, so 2 po's per sector
37 square miles to patrol with 14 po's in uniform and a couple of extra plain clothes running around.
Very little patrolling being done, we keep getting dispatched all over the place to handle jobs, accident, or do paper. A single major incident whole district has just gone down! A railroad crossing breaks we could lose 4-6 cars just on traffic control
usually more!
No foot post
No bike patrol
No Hospital cars
No Day park patrol
some districts can fit inside a single beat in 016!
If we incorporated as a city we would be larger than Rockford with more people!
We need more police!

I live in 008 and I had enough of the lack of police service. It's time that all of us who live on the west end take some action....

I held myself down on a burglary mission in 016 to cruise the alleys. Was chastised by the Sgt. "You can't hold yourself down!"
When I questioned the logic of not doing a mission while on a mission I was told "Just get the Mission # then come clear" so I was cleared and then I did call after call and report after report never actually working on the MISSION!
It's like our politicians telling us everything is great, but it isn't! or how about
The U.S. army does a mission in Afganistan, announces via News big mission, never sends anyone or does anything, then a week later via news it is declared the Mission is over and it was a success!!!
IT WORKS BECAUSE THEY TELL US IT DOES!

I think I can solve this crime. I really should be detective. Where is his wife???? If he pissed her off watching games all weekend and shit then she took the big screen. Knowing how infuriated he would be she had to take his shit with her. He really doesn't care about the TV but he made the report because she's probably one of those chicks who goes shopping and can't find her wallet and pulls everything out on the checkout counter and then there's so much junk laying everywhere that when she finally finds her wallet (by now there's 85 people in line behind her)she's in a hurry to shove it all back in and she forgets half the junk and leaves it in the store. He was just afraid his football-widow, spend thrift old lady was gonna leave his shit on Macys perfume counter or at Victorias Secret and then he'd get a number and everyone would talk about him on SCC's blog again. SCC, you're such a big trouble maker.

If we get a good contract coppers will increase sound impounds, tvbs, tickets, ANOVs and money inventories. You can take that to the bank Mayor. 4% back pay and 16% for 4 years (cost of living). The casino will take care of the rest. Chicago was once rated 3rd richest city. Next fall we can be #1.

It has everything to do with the information you supply to the 911 call taker, but be careful, it is all on tape and they will use the revording to jam you in a New York second.

If the offender(s) is truly in the wind, and you tell the truth, which you should do, it is no longer a burglary in progress, regardless of your occupation.

It has then become a burglary waiting for paper. That decision was made by CPD, not OEMC. Blame our own people, however, as always, the rules are different for the clouted or the exempted, especially the SCREAMING SKULL. I wonder if he waited 60 minutes for a paper car? Hmmm?

Hmmm, I'm surprised at your response...well maybe not. The occupants of the Pavillion like to cruise around 016, lots of victims there. Do you think 016 will get ANY better? You pay ridiculous property taxes, half less police service than I do..well maybe not cause 1421 3rd watch is always at North and Damen. How about Elston and Central buddy, those are shining examples of 016 aren't they? The point is that ALL police officers deserve the same police service, we all have families and we're all trying to get through this shit storm.

Interesting that the order only requires an officer to secure his PRESCIBED weapon. Other weapons are only strongly encouraged to be secured. City liability only applies to the weapon they make you own. You're holding the bag for any other weapon.

It still amazes me that so many coppers look down on others based on the location of their residence. Does living in 016 really make you better than someone who does not? Or is it really not about location and more about the racial make up of the neighborhood? It is true that in neighborhoods with a certain demographic have more crime. But if that demographic moved into 016 would you still think you are better than others? Just asking.

11/11/2009 09:22:00 PM

As a civilian living in 016 I can certainly say that neighborhood pride is shared by everyone - city workers and private company workers alike.

"That" demographic is indeed moving into our area. I'm in Edison Park and have noticed a lot of undesirables walking the streets day and night. I keep an eye on them because you just never know what they are doing here (it certainly isn't to work). I can't say one way or another where it's "better to live" in this city, but I can say for certain it's better to not live here at all.

If I could get a break on my taxes, stop some of these airplanes going over my house, and get the right to exercise the 2nd amendment at least in my home with a handgun..I'd consider staying. But we all know none of that will happen. Because of greed, we fall.

Its disturbing that there are as many negative comments as there are. Bottom line is regardless of rank, he is a police officer and this should worry us all. This is happening in our backyard and all I'm seeing are insults and Monday morning quarterbacking. Anybody that knows the Deputy knows that he is there for the workers. It's pretty obvious that those responding negatively are probably the biggest dogs out there.

An 8th grade NW side boy was killed around 1991 by another 8th grader fooling around with dad's snub nose at a third person's house near Devon-Harlem. Dad was a cop. Kid was playing russian roulette pointing the gun at the other kid's head. Then, Boom!

Kid dies. Mom sues. Dad fights in court to have city included as a defendant because he was required to own the gun because of his employment. City loses that motion and becomes the deep pockets defendant. City ends up paying.

Rule changed overnight requiring primary guns to be locked up and city bought entire department one cable gun lock. Hence the requirement for one weapon and the strong encouragement for the others.

If the city required all weapons to be locked up someone would grieve it and demand the city pay for more locks.

The fact is that the coppers who are doing their jobs regardless of the contract situation will still be the ones doing the work after the contract is settled. Dog asses who look for an excuse for their dogassedness will find a new reason to bitch, fuck off and put the work on everyone else. To tell us that a new contract will make a lazy fuck suddenly see the light and start working harder is a crock of shit.

Take that to the bank.

just like west end of 008, shit heads riding bikes up and down alleys, gang bangers in the parks at night, all the apartments are section 8, former CHA residents. LK leader paroled to 6822 W Devon walking his pitbulls at Imlay park in his drawers, no cops to be found. very, very sad!
