Shredded Buses

  • The owner of a scrap company where the remains of several school buses were found after being stolen from the Far South Side has been charged with illegal possession of auto titles, police said.

The name of the Sunrise bus company could be seen on shards of metal in the yard at SRV Metal Scrapper and Gonzalez Auto Parts & Dismantling, 3405 S. Lawndale Avenue, police said.

Initially, four people were taken into custody, including the owner of the company, Sergio Quintero, 44, who was charged late Saturday with felony possession of a title or registration that has not been assigned, said Chicago Police Department News Affairs....
GPS devices led police to the piles of scrap metal. Doesn't everyone know about GPS nowadays?

The funny part of the story is someone said some boss on scene wanted to take possession of all the shredded metal as "evidence."

The "evidence" weighed in at about 180,000 pounds. So where is/was ERPS supposed to store this stuff? In the lot behind Homan Square under a tarp? And can you imagine being the poor cop going to ERPS, signing the stuff out, bringing it over for a hearing, then transporting it back? It might be good for some OT if you plan it right, but sheesh.

So would you have to inventory each piece of the bus seperately, or can you get away with "miscellaneous yellow pieces of metal"? I guess this would definitely be a bulk pickup! This story is so ridiculous that you know it has to be true.

At about $200 per ton of steel it is $18,600 worth of scrap.

I'm sorry to say that the boss was 100% correct. It's EVIDENCE! The fact that it would be too much of a burden on CPD to recover would hold no water in court. We are so ingrained with the Chicago way, that even the simplest, most logical and legal procedures for obtaining consent, search warrants and securing/recovering evidence are violated everyday. At the very least pictures should have been taken and identifiable evidence, such as metal with vin's or metal with identifying marks should have been recovered as evidence and inventoried. The scrap should have been relocated to ERPS or a secured city lot such as a S&S lot. Don't worry guys, your boss gave you the old wink of the eye and a shrug of the shoulders so everything is legit.

Honestly, are you this stupid? In other words according to you, we are supposed to do everything by the book? Photographs and video evidence would not be enough? If you truly believe the scrap metal should be recovered, inventoried and held by ERPS then you truly are dumb.

Seeing how the average semi carries 25.5 tons. That's just a little over 3semi loads. They could shovel it into a hanger at midway. Bring the jury and judge to the hanger.
Also you don't need a title if the vehicle is 7 years or older and " abandoned"

They had a case not too long ago with stolen tree grates and sewer covers. They had literally hundreds of tons of scrap iron. It was all photo documented and the whole scene was secured by general services security guards until the city either made arrangements to haul it out or until they could estimate the weight and fine the owner. Not sure how that turned out.

CPD has no auto theft unit for many years, years ago junk yards were checked by this Unit for stolen parts from auto's but now stealing expensive auto's is easier than shoplifting. Chop shops, transporting expensive stolen auto's to other countries, and even bringing them to other States is an easy crime. CPD has no follow-up on these crimes except a report for the insurance company. Crime does pay in Chicago with no follow-up.

Pictures were taken , almost 200 , several other pieces of evidence were also photo'd , A piece or two with some identifying mark can be preserved then scrap the rest , give the money to the busses owner and he can collect the difference from his insurance company , if he was transporting "the children" without insurance on his busses then fuck him .

Please tell me you are just being sarcastic. If not...

You damn fool! Are you the same imbecile that came up with the idea for the "snitch boxes"?

You don't have to research state or federal rules of evidence to arrive at this obvious answer:

PHOTOGRAPH THE SIXTY PLUS TONS OF SHREDDED SCRAP!

Forget about license and VIN plates and strips of metal that might read "Sunrise". If you are as anally retentive as I believe you to be, photograph the VIN plates after going through 160,000 lbs. of sharp metal to find them. While you're at it, dust the scrap for prints. Any traces of DNA?

If you aren't a gold star already, your keen intellect suggests that you'd fit right in.

What's next? Did the NYPD and the feds fuck up for failing to put the rubble of the Twin Towers in storage as evidence?

This is a typical West Side thing to do, don't steal school buses to use them as, well, school buses, just grind them up for scrap. Beautiful. Like stealing expensive copper plumbing pipes out of the walls after a highly paid plumber put the pipes in and selling them for... scrap.

Except is wasn't west side willie, it was Jose what done it. They steal at least three quarters of a million bucks worth of school bus and GRIND THEM UP! For SCRAP! And make what, $100k if they are lucky?

Man, let these folks loose out at O'Hare Airport and they can cart away loads of aluminum tubes they can plunder for scrap. They are called AIRPLANES by normal humans. They can probably get a couple of hundred thousand in scrap aluminum for an airplane costing several hundred million dollars.

When I worked for a railroad in the area the scrap junkies would ruin an entire railroad freight car for the 97 pound bronze axle bearings on each wheel. Genius people.

Remember the Chicago Skyway and the former aluminum guardrails along the whole length? By time it was privatized there was not one inch of aluminum guard rail left.

I just hope the scrap monsters don't get a good look at all the gold in my mouth in the form of teeth.

I also never said anything about dusting for fingerprints or swabbing anything. But your far superior detective work would have you lock the offender up and just take some pictures? You would just leave $20,000 of scrap metal on the offenders property for him to cash in when he is released on bond? Maybe Superstar Detective Northside would have the offender pinky swear he keep custody of all the property for court. Great fucking idea! FOOL.

Just like all the people who bitch at O'Hare that "canceled" is spelled wrong on the flight info board at O'Hare. It IS just one "L". Some airports started using 2 "L's" I think because they got tired of people pointing out an error that is not an error.

That was the correct thing to do. That was a fatal accident. The porch would have to be reconstructed so that structural engineers could determine the cause of the porch collapse. Also, the attorneys would need that report to determine liability if porch was constructed below code or if victims overloaded structure, thereby causing porch to collapse.

Normally, the proceeds from the sale of the 80 tons of scrap would go to the insurance company. Capiche?

In the likely event that the owner(s) of the buses is implicated as a conspirator in the crime, the Court will determine the disposition of the value of proceeds from the highest legit bidder.

Otherwise, with the support of rules of evidence and my own personal experience of recovering nearly 100 stolen vehicles [with occupant(s)], mainly then late-model Cadillacs, the ET merely photographs the auto (and VIN plate, if bogus) before the recovered vehicle is returned to the owner, either directly or through the auto pound.
Convictions? Almost all.

Eight buses x 20,000 lbs. = 160,000 lbs. or 80 tons. You might also check Section 404 of the Illinois Rules of Evidence. Can you cite anything to support your stupidity? I didn't think so.

My 1:08 PM comment above stands as is, "Commander".

I agree, particularly with your last sentence. I apologize.

7:41 PM

I wish to clarify my last response.
Assuming that the management of the Sunrise Bus Co. are innocent and the buses were insured for theft, the 4th Dist. car assigned would document 8 separate vehicle thefts with consecutive and cross-referenced R.D. Nos.

The mere fact that all buses were equipped with GPS is overwhelming circumstantial evidence that the shredded metal tracked to the SRV salvage yard some 18 miles away are indeed the remains of the stolen buses. CPD would document the recovery of the stolen vehicles. The owner of the scrap yard is in custody.

The disposition of the estimated 80 tons of scrap metal is ultimately up to the SAO. I understand that shards of metal are marked with "Sunrise". In the most meticulous scenario, one could argue that after videotaping the scrap with the bus company owner, the SAO and CPD detectives present, an attempt should be made to preserve license and VIN plates and any other identifying scrap.

Then the insurance company would make arrangements to haul away the scrap to a foundry for smelting. Common sense screams out that the impoundment of 80 tons of scrap metal would not jeopardize a successful criminal prosecution.

While I refuse to identify an old acquaintance with whom I consulted, suffice to say that s/he may well be regarded as the foremost expert on the rules of evidence in Illinois.

While the actual owner(s) of the bus fleet may be innocent of any wrongdoing, the circumstances suggest "an inside job" by past or present bus company employees.
