Lombard to Save Junkies

  • An upsurge in heroin deaths means all Lombard, IL, police will begin carrying Narcan misters to counter the effects of heroin overdoses.

Coroner Richard Jorgensen said heroin overdoses killed 46 across DuPage County last year. Lombard Deputy Chief Tom Wirsing says heroin overdoses are a community issue, affecting everyone.

Chief Wirsing says police often beat paramedics to an overdose scene and will be able to tell from the victim’s symptoms, companions and surrounding paraphernalia if heroin is the victim’s problem.
Why bother at all? Junkies contribute to all sorts of crime. They carry diseases. When apprehended, they suck up tax dollars for their incarceration and when released, they relapse at an incredible rate. Like it or not, an overdose is a net positive for society.

If families want to keep paying for their relatives, they're entitled to spend that money any way they see fit. But when they get tired of buying grandma a new TV every year or so when hers gets stolen or that nice piece of jewelry that's been in the family for generations disappears after Uncle Junkie comes to visit, maybe they'll wake up and realize supporting bad habits only gets them more of the same.

We speak from personal experience here, so don't lay any crap on us about "...if it was your family member...." It was, and we have zero sympathy for the years of problems he brought to our doorstep.

Because it's DuPage County and the kids dying out there left and right are prototypical suburban kids that don't "look like" they should have a drug problem. They don't see them as junkies. They see them as kids who are having a problem that can be lethal. Just like Oprah just had some show about kids being "tricked" into doing heroin...tricked because they ONLY thought it was oxy, vicodin or cocaine. If they want to pay for it, oh well, give the coppers narcan kits.

Experienced it first hand also and I can tell you that my grandparents would have done anything to save their son, the son that had a heart of gold as a child and would bring any stray home and nurse it back to health, the son that was the star athlete in high school, the son that was an airborn paratrooper, the son that was the father to two of their grandchildren, the son that they buried after years of trying to get help for him. A cop with narcan may have saved him at the moment but in the long run nothing would.

That said, we can not be all things to all people. Should we carry EpiPens for those with severe allergic reactions, insulin for diabetics, psych meds for the crazies, bibles for atheists? Where does it end and who decides who should be saved and who should not?

Then you compound the problem by subsidizing their lives with government handouts, giving them an incentive to procreate....so the taxpayer can support the next generation of fuckups/Democrats.

Like everything that involves a serious issue, I'm ambivalent. I too knew a great kid who OD'd, but I wouldn't let him in our house. I hate those commercials for the "free" phones to be used for emergencies only, but I know when I call a friend of mine in a nursing home, that's what he's using. Kind of tough being human, eh?

It was provided for in legislation in 2010, and is clearly an answer in search of a question. The fact is that about zero of the kids who died would have had a different outcome if the narcotic antidote would have been administered two minutes earlier. Most of them were DRT. But it's a feel-good, "we've got to do SOMETHING!"

There is help and there is enabling and allowing the addict to continue in his or her addiction. I am not sure where to draw the line, but allowing an addict to continue in his addiction indefinitely is not the right thing to do. I had a cousin that was addicted to meth -- he got off after a jail/prison sentence and essentially being disowned by the family until he cleaned up his act. He did. Could he have died in the interim? Most certainly. Could he still be an addict if they didn't take a hard line? Most certainly.

He actually dropped my name once when he got pinched and the copper made the courtesy call. One thing he truly regretted after he bonded out of the county.

In the 1960's England dealt with the heroin problem by allowing doctors to give junkies heroin, along with clean needles, (reducing disease) for pennies, (reducing crime)and knowledge of the amount they're taking, (reducing overdose).Dealing with it as a health problem seemed to work fairly well until libnannyism forbade it. They figure it's better to stretch law enforcement resources and throw money at it than to let these people learn about negative behavior like they do alchoholics. Politicos' every where are control freaks.

sounds like a quota system. except they'll have to come up with a different name for it because y'all know what gary says.

you have to be careful about the words you use because the words conjure up images.

and so in the end if you wipe out crime for example then you should get written up for you successes cuz you're not writing enough tickets, contact cards, etc, etc.. when there's no reason for it anymore.

in other words fuck the crime then.

the city wants revenue generated via fines and fees. crime is a tool.

it's about the money and cpd are the strong arm enforcers for this corrupt clouted cult with a mission of shaking down the citizens.

bust the piss bums for public urination because the city is more likely to collect a fine from that. put a bullshit academic 'broken windows' marketing label on it to sell it as making progress on violent crime.

on the other hand you bust a thug and send them to the county that's costing the city big bucks baby.

what was it again something like 140 dollars a day to keep them in jail.

you're on the wrong side of the financial ledger my friend

bust the apple-picking bandits for snatching a smart phone and you're hurting apple, motorola mobility, samsung, att, or t-moblie's or some other politically connected corporations sales.

like how the hell do you expect these companies to fund the mayors, the aldermans, the state rep's or any other clouted political persons campaign fund raiser if they don't have customers buying replacements for their stolen phones.

we can't report chicago's gdp /economy is growing by busting the smart phone thief. nah man. bust the piss bum and stop fucking with the cities economy..lol

not to mention the economic impact of taking the street corner drug selling king-pins off the streets.

like it or not these people attract money and economic activity to the city and the political apparatus needs it and wants it anyway they can get it. so bust the piss bums

ergo, people with money that buy illicit drugs are attracted to this city by the gang bangers selling.

tourism.

no-one comes to chicago to see the piss bum so bust the very dangerous public urinators instead. that's the mission right

the city gets rewarded with federal obamacare money each time a person gets shot in chicago too -- don't they.

so don't take the shooters off the streets. they're creating jobs

these are you chicago job creators. not the clouted ivy-league ceo's and corporate exec's

i'd like to see an analysis of how many people those highly-educated corporate exec's and politicians with the so-called higher math and science scores have pulled out of poverty in places like englewood and westlawn compared to the illicit gang banger drug apparatus pulling hoodrats out of poverty over the last few years.

nah, i don't like it. don't want to glorify it. but it is what it is.

there's a recent report that ranks worst cities for upward mobility and chicago is number 11. the report states that it requires a min-wage worker to work 40 hours a week in order to afford just one city college class to better themselves.

now, what percentage of min. wage jobs even offer 40 hours a week today considering the corporate obamacare avoidance trick.

sure you can take a 2nd, a 3rd min wage job to get that tuition. but then who has the time to go to school.

the american dream is dead. 0110 squad, get a paper car, notify the crime lab

/sarcasm

I hope some strung out junkie climbs thru your window some night as you lay in bed unable to reach the phone to call 911 or unable to reach your gun (doubt your liberal ass owns one or would use it on a home invader if you did).

Ya see, the RIGHT thing to do, the DECENT thing to do... the AMERICAN thing to do would be to NOT victimize your own family; I don't recall stealing granny's prescriptions or your parents cash, jewelry and electronics to support your drug habit being part of the Pledge of Allegiance. Not crawling through someone's window to burglarize their home to get your next bag of dope is also the right, decent American thing to do.

Now don't get me wrong, I believe in giving people a chance. But if you fail to maintain sobriety after one trip to rehab you should be on your own, completely ostracized from the normal, productive, non-addict segment of society. In a perfect world, chronic junkies who regularly overdose costing the taxpayers tens of thousands of dollars for every trip to the ER would be euthanized like mangy dogs. I won't even begin to discuss the amount of money junkies cost taxpayers in the legal system due to their rates of recidivism.

And allow me to give you a big, preemptive "fuck off" for claiming that addiction is a sickness or disease. While it may be classified as such in the medical world, addiction is a choice. And making choices comes with consequences.

The 'medical experts' claim tobacco addiction - particularly cigarette smoking - is harder to beat than opiate addiction. If true, why do you hear about so many successes when it comes to totally quitting smoking, yet so many addicts relapsing on heroin? Simple. IT'S THEIR CHOICE TO REMAIN A DOPE FIEND.

Next time you wonder why health care premiums are so high or homeowners insurance premiums are out of control or crime is through the roof in certain parts of any given city in this country... THANK A JUNKIE.

The continual denial of the existence of a drug epidemic and treating repeat drug offenders and users with "kid gloves" is one of the biggest contributors to the demise of our great nation, simple as that.

Every fucking thing society wants to do for the downtrodden but cannot afford to fund, just slide that shit downhill until it falls on first responders.

Sure, shoot them up with the narcane, then keep them alive long enough to get the CB number so they can sue. More training on properly administering Narcane (Naloxone) to a dying junky. Just so they can do it again next week.

Policemen are not paramedics and have more than enough responsibilities as it is; this is a paramedic's job. I can foresee liabilities with this policy, and I would hate to see an officer become the scapegoat of some drug addict's death. I've never been an advocate of the social work that has become an ever increasing burden on the shoulders of law enforcement, and this is another example of misplaced responsibility. We live in a society that grows more dependent on government resources, both local and federal. Services do not appear out of thin air- manpower, skill, training, supervision, and equipment (including maintenance/repair/replacement) all cost money and time. The more money and time the police dept spends on someone who cannot or does not want to be saved is money and time taken away from those who can be saved. And I'm not necessarily just referring to drug addicts- it could be the victim of a crime fighting for his/her life.

Let’s say drug dealers were given an opportunity to turn their lives around. Let’s say obamacare funding for this public health crisis i.e. the manufacture and the delivery of Controlled Substances, could fund a street- level pharmaceutical navigator internship program. Let’s say all their real world street experience could be used to legitimately sell legalized medicinal weed. In order to qualify, a cannabis distributor must comply with Title VII requirements and must not discriminate based on race, sexual preference or gender. Maybe the City Colleges could offer an accredited curriculum and certification program funded by taxpayers. Former drug dealers could be offered housing vouchers, nutritional assistance, utility subsidies, essential legal assistance from Lasalle Street not public defenders and unspecified cash money stipends if they pretty please promise to attend classes. All this could be sold to the public as another “Anti-Violence” program or essential crime reduction strategy much like a “Project Safe Neighborhood.”

follow the money.

i wouldn't doubt that every time a shot gets administered there's a check cut for a fed obamacare payment issued to the police dept's that are doing this

follow the money.

if that is the case gary and rahm could add it to the compstat list of contact cards, tickets, anovs, etc.

hey, you guys are not shooting up enough people. we probably couldn't say it like that tho cuz of the images the words conjure up. like quota talk.

nevertheless y'all get it right.

it's not about saving a junky. it's about revenue generation like speed trap cameras is about revenue generation.

cops are the first on the scene when someone tags a building too.

so why not have the cops remove the graffiti while they are on scene instead of rolling someone else out as a clean-up crew.

i'm tellin' ya man.

broken windows baby. we're cleaning this town up.

what kind of deal did the political hacks get with the big pharma's to turn cops into their pushers.

is it any wonder why the source of the heroin is not addressed.

why isn't rahm going after the drug dealer's bankers like rahm tried doing against gun manufacturers bankers.

the bankers are laundering this drug money and the d.o.j. does nothing. it will hurt our economy and gdp if they do.

Paramedics have carried Narcane for years, why is this news? I first saw CFD bring a dope fiend back from the dead in the middle of Western Ave at Washington. One pre-filled syringe under the tongue and he was like before, a screaming raving good for shit low life junky thief piece of shit with Hep C and HIV. Wonderful. Let's save more of 'em.

That guy on Western had just got out of prison, he still had his IDOC ID, release papers and black state issued work boots, black denim jacket and blue denim shirt. Fresh off the prison bus. He took his get out of jail money and bought a bag and got a few feet when he flopped in the street.

I was working CTA Special and watched two 013th District cars slow down and keep on going. So I stopped and called for fire. I declined the lifesaving award just the same.

This fad is called "harm reduction." There is abusers-only public housing in Seattle, St. Paul, and other cities where you can drink/use yourself to death.

http://justice.uaa.alaska.edu/forum/27/1spring2010/b_housingfirst.html

New Zealand has "centers" for inhalant users where they can "huff" solvents "under supervision." Hell, here is a list of instructions to help you live a little longer while you rot your brain, destroy your liver, and give yourself leukemia.

They may require us to carry, but I wouldnt use it. Overdose is a medical condition* that requires medical attention. Leave medical care to trained professionals.
Junkies are a dime a dozen, such are cockroaches.

(* does not apply to medical emergencies pertaining to self or buddy aid. Use heroin wisely as it may cause loss of employment. Typical reactions may cause drowsiness, vision impairment and unconsciousness. If you experience a reaction lasting longer than 8 hours seek medical attention. If you are taking nitrates, using heroin may cause a sudden drop in blood pressure. If you are allergic to opiates, do not take heroin. Talk to your doctor. Heroin and most other addictions are covered by ObamaCare®.

Decriminalize heroin. Then the addicts get it for cheap at a clinic, controlled dosage, controlled purity, clean/sterile means of administering the drug. They don't OD near as much, they register as drug addicted, they don't have to steal and rob to support the habit. And the corner dope slinger has far fewer customers. A huge dent is put into the heroin trade.

The problem then might become that legitimate drug companies might not be able to enough opium base to make the heroin.

Already, the pharmaceutical companies cannot get enough opium product to make the morphine, codeine etc. needed for prescription pain medication.

"Have you seen a pharmacist?"

Uh, no. I have a DOCTOR.

Even the checkout gals have T-shirts about how they're "saving lives every day" by selling you shampoo and pretzels.

Walgreens wants to be your doctor. Walgreens also wants to get into the health insurance business while the gettin is good.

3/13/2014 07:58:00 AM

I have news for you - I have a son and a daughter. When they're old enough to understand - about 7 - I'm going to explain drugs and alcohol to them.

I will tell them that if they ever touch meth, heroin, coke, ecstacy, or PCP - I'll break their fucken arms.

If they get addicted, until they're 18 - I'll work to get them help.

Once they're 18 - F U C K T H E M... I've seen what this shit does to people, very, very, very few times is there any redemption. I'm not going to waste my time fighting a losing battle.

And in fact, if we stopped trying to save these fucks, then maybe more of them would realize that it's a bad idea BEFORE starting up with this crap.

Oh, and sorry that your kid is a junkie - but that's not my fault, and may not be yours. Stop trying to be so high and mighty because you feel you screwed up...

Responsible "public policy" would be to prevent overdoses before they even happen. Contract with that mosquito-spraying outfit -- the one with those buzzing nozzles in the backs of the trucks -- to lay down a thick fog of Narcan through whole areas on summer nights.

If a little is good, a whole lot must be better.

Yes, that is what they do and they brag about it to their probation officers. I know, I speak from experience.

You're right on spot with this, SCC. Too many liberal do-gooder types, some of which like to flaunt some type of "masters degree" (in ... sociology, psychology, crim. justice, whatever...), but absolutely zero street experience, are often the ones to espouse this issue quite loudly, and demand that society should take care of it because it's all our fault. I've seen this shit on LinkedIn criminal justice forums, and these clueless people are truly scary.

There are certain other people who shouldn't be saved from their own demise. Some fat guy having a heart attack, for example, doesn't deserve the time and resources that would be wasted by a paramedic trying to revive his sorry ass. Similarly, why spend the money trying to treat people with "depression" (read: moral weaknesses and character flaws)?
