We don't recall any announcements from the Area Deputies or even Beck's office authorizing such restrictive policies this summer. This covers something like eighty-plus-percent of summer weekends. When are officers supposed to get some time to recover and recharge their batteries? Maybe enjoy a long weekend, catch a show, spend some time with the family?

Maybe everyone should go above and beyond while on patrol and arrest, ISR, blue card or ANOV every swinging dick that they see. Maybe the most awesome Commander and Deputy will permit one weekend day off.
The union needs to take this to court/grivence and or the media. The department is not properly staffed. Every holiday and community event is a time restricted day, this is nuts! Hire more police. Chicago has an out of control crime problem and it is only getting worse.

I am grateful that the department actually gave advanced notice of these dates. It's the first time I can recall all the mandatory work dates for the upcoming year were posted at the beginning of the year. Finally, a little common sense.

Supt should look into hiring retired CPD to work part time inside desk jobs. Yes I know this has been tossed around for years. Example, I bet an old retired cop could put those fkg binders together for the "blame and defend meetings " in a quarter of the time these full time desk dolly kids do it.
If retirees take over clerical desk jobs and get it done in half the time and half the cost, that will put more able body cops back on the street and lessen these "mandatory work dates".

The CPD must think the overtime issue in 19 is about ready to blow up in the department's face. Potentially hundreds of thousands of dollars in back pay are going to be owed to officers, because of the poor management of OT. Capt. P.K. and his crew have been very quite lately!
They’ve covered their bases by posting this in the CO Book when they did:
Section 23.6 — Overtime for Pre-Planned Events
The following procedures will apply in case of events which will require the cancellation of days off and for which the Department has received a minimum of 21 days' prior notice.
In those units which have been designated to provide personnel, seniority will be the dominant factor in the selection of Officers required to work their regular days off, provided that the Officer to be selected possesses the necessary skill or special qualifications to perform the duties required. The Employer shall seek volunteers on the basis of seniority from among those qualified Officers in said unit. If there are insufficient qualified volunteers, the Employer shall select Officers on the basis of reverse seniority, provided that the Employer may assign probationary officers without regard to seniority.
The Employer will post a notice of such events in the CO book and Officers desiring to exercise the option to work will notify their unit commanding officer within seven days of the date the notice was posted.
For the purpose of pre-planned overtime assignments, a unit may be defined as a bureau, division, district, watch, tactical team, etc.
So what to do for those of you who don’t have enough time on to get these days off? Here is where it would be wise to understand that there’s more than one way to skin a cat. Get creative… Your imagination is your only limitation.
OT: Just heard some interesting news. Mr. Catanzara has been relieved of his police powers again. This time for allegedly campaigning for the FOP top spot while on the medical. Does anybody realize that this guy would be an embarrassment if he somehow got elected to represent us? Wise up people. He may be outspoken, but look at the downside.

The best part is not just getting the days cancelled but not getting notified until a day or two before, and even then maybe not even that early. These jack asses at HQ know about these yearly events but like clockwork never notify anyone until the last second about days off. What a fucking joke
No time off eh, I'll be on suspension for about two thirds of those events. No joke. When I come back I will suddenly get sick. Then: retirement. Glad of it. I'll be off anyway without using any of my own time. I've been saving to make up for the lost suspension time. Adios amigos.

Restricted means nothing. There’s nothing in the contract that defines “restricted” Last year the Capt said it means pdays only, something he made up. Grievances were filed and officers got their pday back but at what cost of morale? Pleasant lake front district being run into the ground.
I was at every roll call in 019 for election. I spoke about giving the biggest stick to the person we empower. This is the issue to draw the line in the sand.

Our mental health policies need to be revamped and overhauled. I was talking with the wife the other night who is an ER nurse at a children's hospital. Every first responder/nurse, ER doctor, veteran etc.. regardless of your level of engagement if you will has some form of PTSD, I can guarantee you that. All this shit that the department piles on us and not a single reprieve from any of it. We need a law suit against the city for being put under mental duress on a regular basis without any foresight as to the impact on mental health. It doesn't take a genius to realize that a lot of what happens in life/society is related to mental health unless your a progressive liberal then your head is just buried to far up your ass.

I don’t agree with all of those dates being restricted, but at least they’re telling everyone in advance which dates may be an issue. The problem is when everyone tries to take the same unlisted weekend off because it’s one of probably four weekends with no events planned.

And stop trying to give our job away to retired guys. CPD needs and OT unit. These festivals, Cubs Opener etc should be staffed with PO’s working days off or furloughs at time in a half. Make these event organizers kick in to pay for the needed security. You can’t use on duty guys or pull Tact teams from all over to cover summer events. They’re all assigned to districts because they needed there.
Like I wrote about, when the Weasel needs you she is your friend, any other time your nothing to her!

No, the embarrassment has been and still is the gutless self-serving do nothing type of leadership the FOP is known for. He has balls, says what many would like to say about how things are run. Of course he isn't liked by the merits do nothings and by people like Larry the Toad. The truth is embarrassing to them, that's also why they hate this blog. The current FOP are neutered political do nothings just wanting to keep their sweet spot. But how many will even bother to vote? I imagine that if the full complement of officers was still at 019 when it merged with 023, this would not be a problem. That number should never have been allowed to decrease.

Every 2 days of OT you work equals 3 days off in the future. rumor in 11 is that the CO is going to only allow 10% off for weekends.
I dont think it said no time off. I think its a heads up that 15 percent rule will be strictly enforced, with the possibility of the chief to further limit and go below the 15 percent. I could be wrong but thats how i do it. If he is violating the 15 for all of those weekends, that is wrong. I would just get clarification instead of name calling.

(1) all those dates are public knowledge--so if you have been the police for more than ten seconds- you would know those will be "tough" to get off using comp time
(2) Hopefully this means the super select OT Cptn Kane bike buddy OT hounds will volunteer to change their days off during those weeks to work the event---they deserve a couple days of rest...(not every week , how about no less than 50 percent of the weeks--little rest, little less tax payer dollars for bs overtime)
(3) this does not apply to Area Dep Chief dollies and bean counters...or the hordes of hidden inside peoples.

You need to familiarize yourself with your contract. Section 23.6 breaks it down in a language even a simpleton like yourself should be able to understand. See the post from I FART above.
And the keyword is “restricted”. So those that have some time on the job will be fine. Those without will have to orchestrate “creative absences”.

We all know this will solve crime and make the city safer. Those criminals are shaking in their shoes knowing that extra police will be out there. Or, maybe they will just do their own rediversion of resources.
If your over stressed call EAP
The solution is simple. Open up each of those weekends as a special employment opportunity, similar to the Chicago marathon, to avoid restricted time do and canceling days off. You would get plenty of officers to sign up and work those dates for overtime.

019 burglary team on days haven’t made an arrest in 8 months. Those guys need to go back to midnights.
Have 8 years on the job. The only summer plans that I'm making are enjoying my last furlough, starting another job in the private sector, and then leaving this city. Yes it is a risk and the money will be tight for a while. But I feel like it's the right decision for myself and my family. I have no political connections or phone calls. I work the beat car and honestly have no motivation to join tact or any other super secret team. The "thrill" of the job has long faded. It's time to start new. Good luck to all.
The desks could be manned by auxiliary officers and the detective division and review offices could be manned by part time detectives. These are paper jobs but the desk auxiliary officers would have to be armed because of their exposure to public view. These positions would have to be negotiated and the FOP could represent the part times in negotiations for losses union dues
Maybe now all those rookies that are running and gunning will slow down a little bit knowing they’re going to miss a lot of time with friends and family because of the city canceling days off or switching peoples hours. It’s ridiculous you want to go to a tactical team or a unit it’s even worse for you. At least if you’re in patrol On the watch you can work your regular tour and go home not be moved around.

This is nonsense,take this from a retired guy who raised 2 daughters. The most important thing that your children and spouse will remember is not how much you worked but how much you were with the family. Money can always be made as long as you have health, my daughters tell me even this day about how much they remember what we did together. Something even simple like attending plays,parties,sport events that they were part of, going for ice cream, vacations to Wisconsin dells and Indiana beach among the most reasonable.
Being older now and knowing that you younger coppers are still looking out that expansive windshield making memories while I and others like me, we are looking at the rear view mirror which is much smaller making small memories but remembering the things we did with the family.
The first year otj, got into the "police culture," nonsense the "cop bars,' and all that other money wasting events. So took stock of this and put family first, this job is just like the man that stacks/counts boxes in a warehouse when your done you go home and take care of your #1 priority the family. We all know coppers who "worked their asses off," and unfortunately had a demise way to early. Worked some special but never was greedy and worked so much that the family treated me like the visiting uncle.

When attending retirement seminars funny t hear coppers brag, "I was never on medical," as that is a badge of honor. The badge of honor is taking care of the family and if your not feeling well the family is there to take care of you,and the medical was hard fought for to make you recover from any illness, from physical to mental illness use it!

Why did the rifle at Mercy Hospital fail? Was it the SWAT Officer’s personal rifle or dept issued? Was it cheap dept ammo? Was the rifle not properly maintained by the officer or pieced together with hodgepodge parts? Are the dept carbines safe to use? Is this an officer safety issue? Why do we have to find out officer safety issues on the blog and not in the Daily Bulletin?

The carbines issued by the districts were all brand new Smith & Wessons. They are over 10 years old now, so they may or may not be servicable, you should do an inspection and function check before signing it out. The rifles issued by SWAT were refurbished old Bushmaster rifles and the barrels were replaced. Problem was the feed ramp and the chamber did not smoothly match up, and there was a tiny lip of metal where the soft tip powerpoint ammo would get snagged on. This is what happened at Mercy. The quick fix was to take a dremel and smooth the feed ramp out. The long term fix was to buy new, high quality rifles for SWAT, but that process was held up by budget restrictions and red tape.
Came on in 1986, it was never this bad, yea some time off was restricted but the mayor is obviously tipping her little hands we definitely need more coppers on the street. The retired copper plan that is being considered could be the best idea yet. Get the coppers full duty out of the hide outs,and on the streets, they get the same pay ad many desk dollies get "secret overtime," this would help coppers get time off for events with the family.

Thank you for telling the truth. Who refurbished the rifles? Why was this problem not discovered on the range? Let’s have some transparency and accountability on this Dept. Did the SWAT Officer shoot that rifle after it was refurbished? Probably not. So these fucked up rifles are still on swat? You swat circus clowns stay away from 005. I don’t want you near my district. If I do see you, I promise you that I will inspect your rifle. Three tours across the pond and 18 years in the Marines, I promise you that I know how to inspect a rifle.
